By pasture raising our heritage chicken flock, we bring our hens beyond the free range and intensify their most healthy habits of scratching, foraging and exercising. Our Cornish and slower growing Poulet Rouge meat birds, as well as our mixed flock of laying hens, live in portable hoop houses that are moved through the fields on a quick schedule. Because pasture-raised chickens are constantly moved to fresh ground, they live and feed on always-lush, always-healthy grass and plants. Moving the chickens takes extra time, but it’s worth the work to ensure that what they leave behind enriches all of our fields, and does not damage the soil in heavy concentrations. This ensures that our pastures are always rich with a variety of grasses and legumes, and plenty of yummy bugs and critters.

This fresh, active diet is not only better for the chickens it’s better for you. Studies show that pasture-raised eggs are tremendously higher in beta carotene, folic acid, vitamin B-12 and Omega 3s, and much, much lower in fat and cholesterol than those from conventionally confined birds. And, our ladies are happier too.

We work closely with a local feed mill to custom grind our own broiler feed. This way we ensure that our chickens are fed a diet that focuses only on quality ingredients and locally produced grains. The health and well being of our birds is our paramount concern and cheap ingredients and questionable short cuts are not ever permitted. We have never used antibiotics, hormones or arsenic on our flocks.
